De toren is vernoemd naar de nabij gelegen steiger Houten Hoofd, dat reeds in 1464 gebouwd is. [1] Tegenwoordig (2015) is er in de toren een restaurant gevestigd.

Tatsächlich ist der Hoofdtoren eine vergrößerte Ansicht der Türme, die die Nordseite von Hoorn schützten. Das sieht man noch an den Mariatoren, dem einzigen noch erhaltenen Turm der nördlichen Stadtmauer.
